SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what each one is and what to do about it

Customers no longer find businesses only by clicking blue links. They also read Google's AI summaries and ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude who to hire. SEO, AEO and GEO are the three habits that decide whether your business shows up in all of those places. Here is what each one means, where they overlap and what a small business should actually do.
The short definitions
- SEO (search engine optimisation): earning a place in the ranked results of search engines such as Google and Bing, through relevant pages, a fast technical foundation and trust signals such as links, reviews and a complete Business Profile.
- AEO (answer engine optimisation): writing and marking up pages so search engines and assistants can lift a direct answer from them — featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, voice answers and AI summaries.
- GEO (generative engine optimisation): making your business easy for generative AI tools to understand, cite and recommend — in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI search modes.
How they overlap
They are not three separate jobs. Good SEO is the base: AI tools that search the web tend to draw on pages that already rank and are clearly written. AEO adds structure — a direct answer near the top, honest FAQs, clean headings and schema markup. GEO adds consistency across the wider web, so that when an assistant checks several sources, they agree about who you are, what you do and where.
What to do: a practical checklist
- Make pages crawlable and fast. Check that search and AI crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt, that pages load quickly on mobile and that important text is real text, not only images or scripts.
- Answer first. Open each service page with two or three plain sentences saying what you do, for whom and where. Assistants quote that kind of passage.
- Write real FAQs. Use the exact questions customers ask — cost factors, timelines, what is included — and answer them honestly in a few sentences.
- Add structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList markup describe your business unambiguously to machines. Only mark up content that is visible on the page.
- Keep your details identical everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours and description should match on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
- Earn independent mentions. Reviews, directory listings, local news, partner sites and case studies are the third-party evidence that AI tools and search engines both rely on.
- Show who is behind the page. A clear About page, real names, locations and contact details build trust for people and for models.
- Keep content current. Update pages when prices, services or processes change, and show the update date.
- Consider an llms.txt file. It is an optional plain-text summary of your site for AI tools. Support varies between tools, so treat it as a low-cost extra, not a ranking factor.
- Measure. Track impressions and queries in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and watch for referrals from AI tools in your analytics.
What nobody can promise
No agency can guarantee a first-page ranking or a place in an AI answer. What can be promised is specific work: a site that is easy to crawl, clear to read and consistent across the web.
Beware anyone who sells guaranteed AI placement. These systems change often, and their answers vary by user, location and day. Steady, factual, well-structured content is the part you control.
Where to start
If you are choosing one thing first, fix the foundation: a fast, accessible website with clear service pages and an honest FAQ. Then complete your Google Business Profile and ask happy customers for reviews. From there, add structured data and build mentions.
BytGlen builds these foundations into every website we make, and offers SEO, AEO and GEO as an ongoing service. See our SEO company in Kochi page, or read the local SEO checklist for Kochi businesses.
